DAC MST101 Workshop 2019

Data Visualization

Date: 10 September 2019

Time: 7PM – 10PM

Venue: A 4.14 & A 4.15

Facilitators: Shu Yi & En Hao

What is MST? — Microsoft Office Excel & Tableau

DAC MST 101 Workshop was all about Microsoft Office Excel and Tableau, 2 software tools that can help to perform Data Visualisation, where visual elements can be used to provide an accessible way to see and understand trends, outliers, and patterns in data. In this workshop, we covered Data Cleaning with Excel and Data Visualisation with Tableau.

Part 1: Microsoft Office Excel, the basics of Data Cleaning

Part 2: Tableau, Data Visualisation and gathering of insights

En Hao explaining how Tableau is one of the key tools in Data Analytics
En Hao teaching the participants how to navigate in Tableau. From connecting the data to ultimately putting them into sheets and charts

Data visualisation can be used to explain the logical relationships between data and lead to more informed decision-making.

Exercises were also given to participants to apply their knowledge of what they have learnt

There are pros and cons to using either software for Data Visualisation.

MS Excel has been around for a very long time and many people are familiar with its ability to sort and visualise data. However, it does have some limitations, where it is not as powerful or intuitive as Tableau when it comes to data visualisation.

On the other hand, Tableau has only been popular recently, and for most of us that are new to such a software, it’s natural that we’ll need to spend additional time to pick up the new skill. However, Tableau is much more user-friendly with its drag and drop functions and allowing our creativity to ‘run wild’ in designing the graphs that will give clear insights.

With that, we hope that everyone has enjoyed our workshop and see you in our next workshop!
